Phil was Leader, but it was an All-Girl Orchestra. The band featured "Evelyn and her Magic Violin". Performances were broadcast on a radio show called the "Hour of Charm" with the Mistress of Ceremonies being none other than Arlene Francis. The idea itself was quite a novelty at the time, and smelled real good, too! The organization that Maestro Spitalny mustered up was at least 2 1/2 times the size of the modern day "Billy & the Beaters", (often 6 times the size)
and had its very own long-running 1 hour radio slot
(15 years, 3 different networks).
The frilly sequined costumes visible in the photos, easily beat the Beaters' dudes' duds hands down!! Hair-do's & grooming were prescribed, mandatory, and top notch. Every member of the Orchestra had to sign a contract to remain unmarried for two years, but philandering was allowed. ( it must've been like a den of oversexed rabbits! ) The romantically pregnant plot of the movie "Some Like it Hot" with Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis, & Jack Lemmon was openly based on
Phil Spitalny's notorious sex-segregated entertainment brainstorm.
Even Phil himself and magical violinist Evelyn found it hard to wait...., Phil married her 'magic violin' and retired with her to Miami Beach, where he became a
female music historian, voiceover artist, bit actor,
italian restaurant piano lounge singer,
wedding planner, master of ceremonies, restauranteur, radio themesong writer,
ballet producer and real estate agent, just to make ends meet.
